how to play?
Every puzzle is one famous GitHub repository. You get 6 tries.
Each guess compares attributes with the secret repo:
- ✓ same language / ✗ different
- ↑ the secret has more stars than your guess / ↓ fewer / ✓ same star range — ranges: 3k–10k · 10k–25k · 25k–50k · 50k–100k · 100k–200k · 200k+
- ↑ the secret is newer / ↓ older / ✓ same year
- ≈ some shared topics (✓ if 3+)
Every miss reveals more of the README and unlocks a new hint. When the game ends, the full README is revealed. Use the puzzle number controls to play previous days.
Gitdle is a free daily guessing game for developers, in the spirit of Wordle. Each day at midnight UTC a new puzzle goes live: one famous open-source repository, presented through its README with every identifying word blacked out. Your job is to figure out which repo it is from the writing, the tech stack and the metadata trail your guesses leave behind.
All the data comes from the public GitHub API — star counts, main language, creation year and topics of some of the most popular repositories on the platform. Nothing is made up: if the game says the secret repo has more stars than your guess, that is the real ranking talking.
Miss a day? Every past puzzle stays playable in the archive — use the arrows or jump straight to a puzzle number. Your progress and streak are saved in your browser.
